In DRC, FINCA innovates by integrating ESG principles at the heart of the financial education clients

At the headquarters of FINCA DRC in the very boardroom where all strategic meetings happen, a training session for Village Banking (VB) loan recently marked a significant Shift on how FINCA empowers through training its customers. The client trained were not major SME but microentrepreneurs that are at base of the Congolese economy supporting homes and communities through their small businesses.
By simultaneously integrating ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) principles and financial education into a single system, FINCA DRC is setting an important milestone: that of a structured and proactive approach aimed at aligning financial inclusion and sustainable development. This initiative is still not very widespread in the sector which positions the institution as a pioneer in the field. Giving its clients more leverage by acquiring the skills and practical ways on how ESG principles could be applied to their small business and make them more sustainable.
This approach is part of a broader dynamic, in line with the international commitments of FINCA DRC, the only Congolese institution that is a member of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV) and an active member of the United Nations Global Compact. As such, the institution is committed to responsible finance, focused on measurable impact and sustainable value creation.
In essence, the training is aimed at equipping clients to integrate responsible practices into their economic activities. The discussions focused on:
Adopting environmentally friendly behaviors in income-generating activities.
Strengthening solidarity, financial inclusion and social responsibility when conducting business.
Promoting transparency, discipline and good governance within the Village Banking groups and their own individual business.
Managing their finances responsibly.
At the same time, the fundamentals of financial education have been consolidated, including budget management, the importance of regular savings and the responsible use of credit.
But beyond the content, it is the life journey that best reflects the scope of this initiative.
A client since 2003, Mrs. Mokami Bamokia Titi embodies this dynamic of evolution. Starting from a single cooler, it now manages twelve freezers. For her, FINCA is “Lisano nanga”, a constant presence, a partner in transformation.

Ms. Boketshu José, a client since 2004, has equally significant experience. Thanks to FINCA’s support, she was able to ensure her children’s schooling and achieve lasting financial stability. She also reminded the room of one principle of financial discipline that most VB members stand by: “Nazui mbongo ya FINCA na esengo, nako zongisa na esengo.”
The attention and enthusiasm of the participants, who expressed the wish to see this type of training become permanent, confirms the relevance of this integrated approach.
Through this initiative, FINCA DRC is not only supporting its customers financially. It is redefining the standards of the sector by combining inclusion, education and sustainability, thus consolidating its position as a leading player in impact finance in the DRC based on its value of trust, warmth and courage that truly embody the ESG principles
